Olympic Flame visits the MER 2/6/2012
As a part of the Olympic torch relay and it's visit to the island, the MER had the honour of carrying the torch from Derbycastle through to Laxey. The famous and historic car 1 was appropriately selected to carry the flame and its party. The tram ran with trailer 59, the pair were washed down in the morning, and were scheduald to leave Derbycastle at around 12:40. The set arrivied in a very crowded Laxey station at 13:10 with the torch on display as it arrived in the station. The torch had a short stay in the station before heading to the Laxey wheel. Once the crowds had died down 1 and 59 were positioned on to the Goods Shed siding. Bus Vannin and the Jurby Transport museum played a part in the relay: see separate article. Before arrival on the MER the torch was carried on Douglas Lifeboat and also Douglas Horse Tramway car 44.
