Isle of Man Railway
Locomotives - Carriages - Wagons and Misc
Rush Hour on the RailwaysThe first part of the Isle of Man Railway was opened in 1873 from Douglas to Peel. The line opened on July 1st with a fleet of 3 locomotive (Sutherland, Derby and Pender). The following year the Port Erin line was opened with the additional locos 4 Loch and 5 Mona. In 1879 a second company, the Manx Northern Railway opened the line from St Johns up to Ramsey with locos Ramsey and Northern. Both fleets grew till 1896, the IMR with small boilered Beyer Peacock engines, and the MNR with a similar engine plus of Dubs 0-6-0, the Caledonia. In 1905 the IMR absorbed the MNR including infrastructure and rolling stock. The IMR decided to expand in terms of buildings, in addition with two 'large boiler' Peacock locos (10 G.H. Wood and 11 Maitland), along with the saloon carriages. This was to replace the 'non standard' MNR stock. The first locos to be 'disposed off' were the MNR Ramsey and Northern. The last new loco was 16 Mannin in 1926. After the MNR engines, the only others too be dismantled were 2 Derby and 7 Tynwald, although the frames of Tynwald do still exist. The Isle of Man Railway company was taken over by the government after several years of difficulty for the railways. In 1968 the Peel and Ramsey lines closed. From then until 1976 the lines were lifted and there were many items of rolling stock sold and broken up. Today only the Port Erin line runs but is a very successful operation, particularly in the last 10 years with an increasing fleet, with Loch, Fenella and Kissack returning to traffic in that time.
