Laxey and Lonan Heritage Trust Wagon Appeal
The Laxey & Lonan Heritage trust (along with www.manxelectricrailway.co.uk) have launched an appeal to help raise funds for the restoration of two items of MER Freight stock. These are vans 3 and 16. These two wagons are the earliest and latest items of MER goods stock surviving today, with only van 4 in service today. The L&LHT have restored open wagon 10 to its original condition having spent more than 30 years as a tower wagon and are now moving on to restoring the two vans.
The intention will be to restore van 3 into the traditional MER grey livery applied to freight stock. Van 16 is intended to be restored into the Nationalisation Green Livery (as seen today on Paddlebox 16). The restoration for wagon 10 was around £3000 and the target is to raise a similar amount for the two vans. Already the appeal has been sponsored by Isle of Man Post, and as already mentioned is being supported by the team on manxelectricrailway.co.uk. There are also plans for an exhibition for the MER’s freight traffic to be set up in the Blacksmith Siding at Laxey, this is where the wagons are currently housed.
